OLD TOWN NEWHALL STREET FAIRE
Coming Sept. 22, 2001

San Fernando Road will come alive on Saturday, Sept. 22, with music, dancing, food and fun during the fourth annual Old Town Newhall Street Faire.

Sponsored by the Newhall Redevelopment Committee and the Old Town Newhall Association, this free festival offers activities and entertainment for the whole family in the historic downtown area. San Fernando Road will be closed between 5th Street to Lyons Avenue for the event, which will feature Western-themed musicians, a car show, visual and performing arts and crafters of all varieties.

Headlining the afternoon is the award-winning New West, with leader Mike Fleming emceeing on the Market Street stage. Other entertainers include Mitch Speed and Mendin' Fences, Belinda Gail and Saugus Station, with special appearances by the barbershop quartets "Sings With the Fishes" and "Chordz-A-Poppin,'" the Canyon Theatre Guild, Ballet Folklorico and a mariachi band. For the children, the Jim Gamble Puppet Productions will present three performances of "The Wide World of Puppets" throughout the day.

Back by popular demand, Cowgirl Julie will show children how to create lasso wind wands and Western vests and other children's crafts include papel picado, the Mexican art of paper cutting. A petting zoo and "horsey" bounce, sponsored by area merchants, will be free for the children and pony rides will be available for a nominal fee.

For car aficionados, Danny Muscari of SoundStation has organized a car show of finely restored classic automobiles. A quilt show, featuring works by Blazing Star Quilters and other valley artisans will be held in the Republican Party headquarters office. Visual arts will be celebrated, as the works of the Santa Clarita Artists Association will be on display in the former Newhall Photo storefront and along the street between the Santa Clarita Repertory Theatre and the Canyon Theatre Guild.

Food vendors will also dot the street, offering such treats as Kettle Korn, barbecued sandwiches, caramel apples and fruit ices. In addition, local restaurants such as El Trocadero and Thai Pepper along the street will be open for business.

Admission to the street faire and all entertainment is free. For additional information, call Carol Rock at 251-9457.
