V
olunteers spent an afternoon decking the halls of Hart Mansion this week in preparation for the holiday season.
Sabina Miller, volunteer and education coordinator for the William S. Hart Museum, was joined by nine volunteers Tuesday to hang decorations and lights, and to trim two Christmas trees in the Spanish colonial style mansion.
The mansion — perched on a hilltop above William S. Hart Park — feels less like a museum and more like a home, Miller said.
"We're working in Bill's home and telling his story," she said, adding that the museum is decorated with period-appropriate trimmings for a house built in 1927.
The staff of volunteers is what keeps the museum in shape, she said.
"Everybody here puts their heart and soul into this place," Miller said.
With two stories, 10,000 square feet and 27 rooms, the mansion was home to silent film star and director William S. Hart and his sister Mary Ellen until his death in 1946.
The museum typically sees between 15,000 to 18,000 visitors every year, and Miller said there is a good turnout during the holidays.
"This is always a great place to bring people," she said.
In addition to decorating for the holidays, Miller is also preparing for an evening of "Cowboys and Carols" on Dec. 10, Hart's birthday.
The night will feature a concert in the living room of the mansion by Christina Ortega and her band, playing a mix of country, bluegrass and traditional Mexican folk music.
Tickets for the concert are $25 plus one unwrapped toy for a donation to Toys for Tots. Miller said seating for about 70 is available.
"This is the best-kept secret in Los Angeles County," said volunteer Sheila Miller. "People love this place."
The William S. Hart Museum is located above William S. Hart Park, 24151 San Fernando Road. Admission is free.
