We moved to Gaezeley St. in about 1955 in then Saugus, Mint Cyn., Forest Park. I recall going to Ace Cain's place , in fact I was about 2-3 yrs. old when my parents threw me in Mr. Cain's pool and taught me to swim. I also recall how grateful on one occasion when we had to evacuate due to fires and we ended up at Ace Cain's, sitting in the pool with ashes and embers falling all around, my dad kept saying we will be all right. And we were. I love this site.

Well said, Carolyn, but this site is blessed with an excellent Webmaster who deletes the Idiot entries. I first moved to Saugus in 1959 and Graduated Hart in 1961 so I was thrilled to find this site. I'm so glad they take care of it so well.

Webmaster's note: Thank you for the compliment. When you're using a 10-year-old "guestbook" program, it's difficult to stay ahead of the robot attackers in China and Russia who seem to think that if they hit you enough times, you'll buy their Viagra. I've been thinking for some time of migrating to a php-based "forum," as you're probably used to seeing these days, with tricks to keep the robots away. It would mean effectively shutting down this guestbook — you'd still be able to read all of the old guestbook entries — and starting fresh. Opinions, anyone?

Does any one know which Saint Clara is the Santa Clara River named after? Thank you, Jessica

According to SCV Historical Society Executive Director Pat Saletore: It was named for St. Clare, the virgin of Assisi and foundress of the Order the Poor Clares. She is the patron saint of embroiderers; eye disease; eyes; gilders; goldsmiths; gold workers; good weather; laundry workers; needle workers; Santa Clara Indian Pueblo; telegraphs; telephones; television; television writers. Her feast day is Aug 11 (or 12, depending on whom you ask). She is not the only St. Clare or Clara, but it was on her feast day that the Portolá party entered the valley (in 1769).

One more thing after looking at the pictures of the Oak of the Golden Dream, I use to play in that tree when I was a kid. One of the workers was killed by a bee sting while getting honey out of one of the branches in about 1964 or 1965. All of that area was Walt Disney's ranch and he was still living when I first started going there. There was a man made waterfall and a pond with a covered bridge that I use to fish out of with my friend Jody who lived there and her father was the caretaker. What a great childhood memory. Thanks so much!

In the mid 80's, I lived in my step-dad's cabin at Castaic, along with my husband and two young children, for a year while our home here in Maribu was being built.. The care-taker there at the time was an old cowboy from the area named Armor, who passed away several years ago... My step-dad is the grandson of Thomas Marple and Leovijilda Martinez Marple, who was a member of one of the areas first Spanish land grant families, and for whom Marple Canyon is named. The cabin is located on what is now called Nichols Lane, and sits on a hillside above the 5 freeway, on 40 acres. It was built in the 20's by my dad's parents, Harvey Nichols and Ruth Marple Nichols. It's a charming wood sided cabin, with 2 guest houses, a swimming pool, tennis court, and a barn and corrals for horses. At the time we still got our water from a natural artesian well. Today, the rest of Castaic has grown up around it, and most people probably don't even realize it's there, but every year my family still gathers there to celebrate Thanksgiving. This Spring, my step-dad turns 81 years old, he's the last of his generation of Nichols, and the last of his breed...he still works full time, 5 days a week, and he still runs a cattle ranch he owns in Porterville! He's a real cowboy! His name is Robert Nichols. Just thought I'd fill you in on another little piece of Castaic history.

I was a SFV transplant from roughly 1965 - late in that year. My parent's home was being built out Bouquet Canyon and when it was complete, we left the Valley for Newhall. True culture shock at the time. I was 13 then.

Although that was a tough transition for some of us, meaning me :) , I did make the best of it. Got attached to Newhall-Saugus as my hometown, made a few new friends, and have some great memories of being a Hart High Indian.

Stumbled onto this site this evening and am glad I did. Was looking for historic stuff and found it. I recognized Nanette Le Gasse's name right away. Hi!

What prompts me to write was looking through the photos and ... nearly falling out of the chair with laughter.

I was a Class of 69 grad and clearly remember the Class of 68 as the most talented bunch of actors (think Curtis Stone), musicians, (John Hobbs, who was not credited in one photo and THAT needs correcting, Andy Kress, John Duarte), and athletes (John Calzia and John Dunkin). I genuinely admired those guys. They were interesting and funny. I hadn't given the Honby Men's Club a thought in years until I saw that photo. Got my old Tomahawk out to look at that old photo as a result.

Those were THE funniest bunch of people - pranksters of a sort. Did a couple of memorable Pep Rallies way back, too.

What a pleasant find. If you know of a way to get another priceless photo from the Class of 68 it would be the "underground" Wedding Photo from Anne Frank that same year. :) that would be wonderful, too. Another great item.

Wishing everyone from way back well. Thanks for the site. It's terrific.

I lived in Newhall and surrounding area most of my growing years, graduating from Wm. S. Hart in 1963. Really preferred it the way it used to be when it was small and so charming.

I can't believe that I happened upon this website during my evening internet travels! My husband and I got married here in Michigan in 1964 when he was home on Army leave from the "former" missle base in Newhall. My first trip away from MI was to Newhall as a new bride! My first job was at the Santa Clarita Hospital. I don't even know if it still exists, but hope to find out as I research the archives on this site. I'm beginning to feel a little nostalgic, since we were married on December 12th and arrived at the LA airport on Christmas day.....me in my winter coat standing beneath the palm trees! I can remember taking an evening ride and seeing a couple of cute little "puppies" running across the road. I had never seen a coyote back home in Michigan! Never saw a rattlesnake until the huge one the hospital maintenance man showed me in the hospital parking lot! Needless to say, when the year was up and the Army gave us our discharge, I was very homesick and ready to head back home. I did meet some very nice people who worked with me at the hospital. I had some great experiences there. Some of the patients I cared for have left lasting memories. I could go on and on with my reminiscing. I want to thank you for allowing me to do so on this site I stumbled upon. Have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Oh, one more thought........I really do miss the warmth and sunshine as I sit here in the cold and gloom of a Michigan winter..........

Sincerely, Victoria

The Corral Drive-in was located in Seco Cyn. about where the Grace Baptist Church stands today. My family will never forget the first time we went to the drive-in after we moved to Saugus in 1964. The drive-in was quite old by then and the screen was leaning or somehow mounted on the mountain slope on the far end of the drive-in. There was a fairly large concession stand. Saugus didn't have many stores and no real entertainment venues back then and having a drive-in was quite a treat to those of us who moved up from the S.F. Valley. The drive-in was owned and operated by a family who lived in the Santa Clarita Valley. I can't remember their last name, but the Hart alumni from the 50's and early '60's still speak about the family with fondness and respect. Nan
