ECHOES OF THE PAST
Standing in the center of Beale's Cut
you can hear your echo.
Listen, too, for the echoes
of old wagons creaking past,
stagecoach drivers urging the horses
to strain harder,
General Beale's voice,
directing his crews of 'highway builders'
and the ring
of fifty hammers and chisels!
Listen! ...• Hear them?
MYSTERIOUS SILENCE
A strange thing happens
just a short distance from the spot
in this picture.
The road leads around the corner
of a small hill where ...•.
suddenly, all sounds
of the nearby highway fade ....
Silence everywhere,
except for the soft, melodious songs
of the birds
who make their homes here.
ACTIVITY FOR YOUNGSTERS
Numerous, almost overgrown, trails
point the direction
to the ends of miniature box canyons.
You'll enjoy these nature jaunts.
They're usually
not more than five or ten-minute walks
from the old road.
Children will find
plenty of realistic scenery for
"cowboys and Indians"
or "stagecoach holdup" games.
