the Child & Family Center having joined the board through the recent merger with the Domestic Violence
Center, with particular concern for prevention of violence through education and empowerment of women
and men, girls and boys. Sue can be counted on for innovative ideas and sharing connections to help Scouts
raise funds and serve kids. Sue helped launch Circle of Hope support services for those suffering with prostate
cancer, as her husband Bruce died of this in 2008, and she still loves to dance since volunteering in Dancing
With Our Stars. Her Eagle Scout son, Ransom, is now senior district director for Boy Scouts of America, hav-
ing received a Master’s degree from CalArts. Sue has been a Den mother, Cub master, merit badge counselor,
committee member and fund-raiser for Scouts. She is a past secretary of Newhall Trail Riders, and was an
Illinois 4H honor member. Her family also includes husband Jerry Buckley, grandson Alexander, and Dober-
man “Nüdel” who is deployed with Sue as a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Cal-Emergency
Management Association Search (SAR) dog.

Organizational Impact: Sharlene is a driving force in JCI SCV. This year she chaired 40 Under Forty and has
been involved with the organization for over 10 years. She is a huge driving force in helping secure volunteers
along with rolling her sleeves up herself to get the work done. She was in charge of putting a team together
this year for American Cancer Society’s “ Relay for Life” while raising funds through JCI SCV for American
Cancer Society. Sharlene also sat on this year’s Santa’s Helpers committee which provided a holiday party at
the ice station for over 240 under privileged SCV kids by supplying them a ice skating party with food, a visit
with Santa, and actual presents. Sharlene is currenly serving on the board as member-at-large which helps all
board members in their respected positions.
Biography: Sharlene was born and raised in Acton and Santa Clarita. She graduated from Vasquez High,
College of the Canyons, and CSUN. She and fiancé Michael have two boys, James and Steven. Sharlene has
held local jobs with Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich as an intern, City of Santa Clarita Arts
and events, SC YMCA as director of Member Services, and now currently as Henry Mayo Fitness and Health
director of member services. Throughout her life she has been a supporter of the College of the Canyons
Foundation through their COC Alumni Committee, SCV Friends is the Library, Next SCV as the Training and
Development chair, Skyblue Mesa PTO, and ran for Saugus School Board in 2018. In Sharlene’s spare time
she has completed 6 full marathons, 5 of them being with SOAR ,
over 50 half marathons and one half Ironman.
