The great wide grocery strike. In the
first grocery market strike since 1978, on
October 12th, 2003, Vons, Ralphs and
Albertson's employees went on a stike that
lasted over six months. Over 70,000 union
members took to the picket lines all over
California, making national news. Although
there were long picket lines, people still
found shopping at these centers a possibility,
as thousands of limited-time employees were
hired to fill the spots of the strikers.
I'm sorry Mrs. Jackson. In late 2003 and
early 2004 both Michael and Janet Jackson
made news headlines for very different
reasons. Michael Jackson was brought to
court under claims of child molestation, a
decision that has not yet been decided.
Janet Jackson, however, created her own
controversy at the 2004 38th Super Bowl, as
she had a "costume malfunction" when Jus-
tin Timberlake ripped part of her top off,
causing mild indecent exposure. As of now,
both MTV and CBS are investigating the
incident to better understand if this occurrence
was truly accidental.

Another chain superstore. This year, Valencia
experienced the arrival of the Crossroads shopping
center, located directly across the street from
Valencia Towncenter. The Crossroads shopping
center includes big name stores as Kohl's, as well
as less well-known stores such as Maggie Mao's Ice
Cream and Treatery. With this new expansion, Santa
Clarita continues its tradition of being a readily
accessible shopping suburbia.
The boys are back in town. This year,
Operation Iraqi Freedom ended and many of the
troops that were overseas returned. Like the one
picured to the left, many corkbroads were set up
in our community in order for locals to have the
opportunity to pray for community members' safe
return home.
