Assistance League Santa Clarita.
2016-2017 Annual Report.

Assistance League Santa Clarita is a volunteer organization that develops and implements programs to make a difference in the lives of families in our community.

We act as a friend at any and all times to men, women and children in need of care, guidance and assistance-emotionally, materially and physically. We seek to fulfill this mission in our community by providing clothing, education and emotional support to families, the elderly and the disabled.

[2018] — Our members currently operate four philanthropic programs serving children and adults in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Operation School Bell is Assistance League Santa Clarita's signature program. It is focused on providing new school clothing and shoes to children in elementary, junior high and high schools in the William S. Hart, Castaic Union, Newhall, Saugus, and Sulphur Springs School Districts. Eligible children are identified by school personnel and, with their parents, are invited to shop for appropriate school clothing at a local department store, where Assistance League volunteers and Assisteens are available to provide help and guidance. Assistance League volunteers believe strongly that children perform better in school when they enjoy a positive self-image. Operation School Bell helps prepare students for school and gives them a positive starting point for learning and academic success. Since, 1991, Assistance League Santa Clarita has served over 25,000 students in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Teddy Bear Patrol has been providing soft, cuddly teddy bears to children who experience traumatic situations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley since 1989. Automobile accidents, fires, domestic problems, separation from a family member, or an emergency room visit are among the situations that warrant comfort from a bear. The teddy bears are distributed by our Assistance League Santa Clarita volunteers to local fire stations, law enforcement agencies, and local emergency rooms. Over 10,000 Assistance League bears have comforted Santa Clarita children since the program's inception.

Family Ties began in 1990 when Assistance League Santa Clarita volunteers recognized that residents at the Santa Clarita Valley Convalescent Hospital would benefit from and appreciate some joy through visits and home cooked meals. Once a month, Assistance League Santa Clarita volunteers prepare the residents a home cooked meal, which is served in a festive atmosphere. Volunteers also use this time to engage and socialize with the residents. To make them feel extra special, the residents are recognized on their birthdays with personal gifts and cake. Homebound seniors need attention as well and we are now providing them with treats that are delivered twice a year to their homes. Spreading smiles is one of our greatest joys.

i care for kids is a program which provides help with vision screening in local junior high schools and pays for eye exams and eyeglasses for students in need. This is our newest program which is an expansion of Operation School Bell. With over 15,000 students on the free and reduced lunch program, we are proud to add eyeglasses to the items we provide to help students succeed in school.
