A decade ago the communities of Newhall-Saugus-Valencia voted to establish their own community college district. On the
same ballot a five-person Board of Trustees was elected.
Among the Board's early decisions was the naming of the Santa Clarita Community College District and selection of Dr.
Robert C. Rockwell as District Superintendent, effective July, 1968.
While the District looked for and then purchased the permanent 158 acre site on Valencia Blvd., College of the Canyon's first
classes were held September 5, 1969, at Wm. S. Hart High School. And despite the difficulties of adjusting the new college's
schedule around high school life, 735 students enrolled to make up the first COG_ student body.
College of the Canyon's real home took form in temporary facilities fabricated in August of 1970. The first day and evening·
classes on the Cougar campus began October 5, 1970. By February, 1972, the fledgling college had won full accreditation.
