On this site in August of 19_24 construction started on the St. Francis Darn, a_-unit of the-
Los Angeles Aqueduct. When it was completed in May 9[ 1926, this concrete-Dam stood
185 feet above Streambefl, -i!11pounding a 61-0 surface-acre fake. -

At 1167½ P.M., March 12, 1928,_ the Dam collapsed c~using-the_ second gFeatest disast~r -
in the state of California:- At-least 4 25 lives were lost -in the 5½ hours that it took the
· released water to travel 54 _miles down -the Santa Clara R -iver-V ~lley to the sea at Ventura. _
