THE MAKING OF A SCHOOL 1978
This year Saugus High graduates its first senior class,
marking its third year as the Hart District's newest
school. Actually, SHS had its beginning nine years ago.
The first plans and purchase of property were made in
1969 as the district saw that the population increase in
the Santa Clarita Valley would require a third high
school. Ground-breaking ceremonies were held in Octo-
ber of 1973 and construction got under way.
Plans for the campus were divided into three phases: I
- buildings A to J; II - buildings K, Q, P, and S; III -
buildings M and N. Phases I and II were completed
when Saugus first opened its doors to students in Sep-
tember of 1975, a little over 6 years after the initial plan-
ning stage.
When classes began in September of 1977 it was more
than evident that the 12 additional classrooms in Phase
III were needed: Some 650 new students on campus
meant a modified split lunch schedule so there would be
enough classrooms to go around. Second semester
classes moved into the Phase III rooms and a less-
crowded more relaxed atmosphere prevailed on the SHS
campus.
No further additions are currently scheduled.
