FOREWORD

One century ago, some of the first pioneers of the West began streaming to
California in an effort to make their fortunes and find a new life ... They have
come to be known as the "49ers" ... These pioneers and our graduating class
--our 49ers - have quite a little in common . . . These students were the first
freshman class of Hart High ... the first sophomores, juniors ... and now are
the first class to graduate from our pioneering school ... We are justly proud
of our school, and these new graduates will be the first to start spreading its
name in the fields of agriculture, industry, commerce and ·others. We hope this
annual will be treasured by our graduates, and our undergraduates, in the years
to come ... Just as the memories of Old California were treasured by the Cali-
fornians who stayed to work and make a great State out of a long strip of soil
along the Pacific Coast.
