Southern Pacific Passenger Train in Snow, 12-19-1970

Click image to enlarge Kodachrome slide of Southern Pacific's San Joaquin Daylight passenger train in Newhall on a rare day of snow, Dec. 19, 1970. (The next time it snowed in Newhall was Jan. 3-4, 1974.) This is less than two months before the 1971 Sylmar earthquake damaged the town. Similar to this other photo by the same photographer, the locomotive has just crossed Market Street. A corner of Anawalt Lumber is visible to its right. The photo was shot by local history enthusiast Gordon Glattenberg, later editor of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Soceity's (est. 1975) monthly "Dispatch" newsletter.
