March 2001 — Descendants of Chief Frances and Fred Cooke gather at the Ruiz-Perea Cemetery in San Francisquito Canyon, where Fred (1881-1958) and Chief Frances (1883-1946) are buried — as is one of their daughters, Katherine Esther Cooke (Balsz).

Chief Frances' ancestry traces to Chaguayabit Village (Castaic Junction) and Topipabit Village (Victorville) prior to European contact in 1769. Fred's ancestry also traces to indigenous inhabitants of Southern California. Thus, all (or most) of the people pictured here are descended from Native Americans who lived in the Santa Clarita Valley and environs, prior to Spanish conquest.
