Minnie Anne Helvey Murphy


Minnie Ann Helvey Murphy passed away September 22, 2013, in Newhall, California. She was born on January 27, 1918 in Bouquet Canyon, although her birth ceritificate says Lang (pers. comm. ~2004). Minnie was a direct descendent of Santa Clarita Valley pioneer Thomas Findley Mitchell.

Valedictorian of San Fernando High School in 1935, she earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from UCLA in 1939, and a Masters in Education from San Fernando Valley State College (now CSUN) in 1968.

She married Matthew Murphy on June 16, 1945 (per marriage cert.). They raised two beautiful children, Robert and Melanie. She was a first-grade teacher for the LAUSD for 36 years. In her later years, she became a devoted Lakers fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew; brother, Victor; and daughter, Melanie. She is survived by her son, Robert; her grandchildren: Tina, Amy, Karina, Christopher, Megan and Kathryn; and her great granddaughters Cynthia and Sophia.
