Oct. 12, 1991: (From left) Scott and Ruth Newhall, former owners of The Signal newspaper, are honored at College of the Canyons' Silver Spur fund-raising dinner. In this photograph, their son, Skip Newhall, is presenting them with a phony plaque from the "City of Valencia"—a spoof on the seal of the city of Santa Clarita. When the community of Valencia was new and Scott was editor of The Signal, reporters referred to the Santa Clarita Valley as the "Valencia Valley." The name didn't stick.
Ruth and Scott Newhall, veterans of the San Francisco Chronicle, purchased their namesake newspaper, The Newhall Signal, in 1963.
For the next 25 years they recorded — and influenced — the goings-on in the Santa Clarita Valley as the area grew from a sleepy L.A. backwater into a self-sustaining family community.
