Signal Coin Columnist a Triple Winner
The Signal Saturday, August 26, 2006
Taylor, 75, of Sherman Oaks, won the Maurice M. Gould Memorial Award for best column in a non-numismatic newspaper. Taylor's column, "Making Cents," appears Saturdays in The Signal. A collector since 1937 and author of "The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent," Taylor also won the prize for best article in a non-numismatic publication for "Beware of Buying Coins at Swap Meets, Garage Sales." Published in The Signal on Oct. 1, 2005, Taylor's piece points out the pitfalls of buying fake and altered coins that frequently show up for sale in such locations.
Worden, who writes for COINage, the largest numismatic monthly, won the NLG award for best coin article in a U.S. coin magazine for "National Treasure," the story of an English gold penny of the early Middle Ages that was involved in a cultural property dispute when an American dealer purchased it and wanted to export it to the United States. The only gold coin to depict King Coenwulf (AD 796-821) and the only coin of any kind with an inscription indicating that money of the period was manufactured in a trading settlement outside of London's Roman walls, it ended up in the British Museum in February. The Numismatic Literary Guild is the professional association of all numismatic writers in all media.
