Post Office Department
Chief Post Office Inspector
Washington

April 25, 1940.

Miss Mary F. Brunner,
Box 246,
Newhall, California.

My dear Miss Brunner:

In response to your request of April 16, 1940, there is furnished hereafter available information concerning the history of the post office at Newhall, California.

The records indicate that the post office at Newhall, California was established on January 16, 1877, with George Campton as the first postmaster. There is attached a list prepared by the office of the First Assistant Postmaster General, showing all the postmasters of record who have served at the office, with dates of appointment.

It is shown that the office was established on Route No. 46129, with Cyrus H. Cotter as contractor, but details of the service are not available at this time.

The earliest record of compensation to the postmaster at Newhall shows that for 184 days of the fiscal year ended June 30, 1877, he received $29.26. Early receipts of the office are not available at the present time.

The records indicate that domestic money order business was established at Newhall on July 5, 1887, and that international money order business was established there on July 1, 1921.

The records also indicate that rural delivery service was established at the office on November 1, 1928.

The 1939 United States Official Postal Guide does not list the office as having city delivery service.

There is enclosed mimeographed material on the Post Office Department and the postal service, which it is believed will be of interest to you.

It is hoped the information furnished will be of assistance to you.

Sincerely yours,
/s/ K.P. Aldrich
Chief Inspector.

Enclosures.
