Deeply enthralled, freshmen Roger
Noble and Stacy Eastman seem happy
to watch a video in English class.
The tube, a mechanical contraption
owned by many, allowed freshmen to escape into another
world, another dimension in time and space and imagination
created by NBC, CBS, FOX, and others. Within this parallel
universe lurked many characters who related well to many
freshmen.
"Claire Danes [of 'My So-Called Life'] is my idol
because she seems so down to earth, and sets a good example,"
stated Anabel Briere. Cory McCabe, on the other hand,
looked up to a character whom many considered a bad
influence. "Homer Simpson is my idol because he is just laid
back and has few responsibilities."
Some freshmen refused to be sucked into the alternate
universe of TV. "There are some shows worth watching but
most are just artificial," stated Charly
Dickerson, Mark
Masters.
Dinson, Farrah
Other freshmen used the
Doad, Sartaj
television as a means of escaping
Dover, Laura
from their daily lives. "I watch TV
to take me away," revealed William
Luna.
Although only a box with a
Duggan, Colleen screen, a picture tube, a lot of wires,
Duran, Elias and a speaker or two, this contraption
Durando, Michael continued to hold significant value
Dymond, Jennifer in the lives of many freshmen,
offering a vicarious escape into
someone else's wildness.
