Varsity Coaches

Mike Herrington - Head Coach
Coach Mike Herrington begins his twelfth year as Head Football Coach at Hart High
School. In eleven seasons under Herrington, the Indians have compiled ten Foothill
League Championships (1989, 1991-99), three CIF Championships (1995, 1998 &
1999), and were CIF runners-up in 1994. Coach Herrington's career record is 128-26,
which includes a one-year stint as head coach at Bellflower High School in 1988.
Coach Herrington began his coaching career at Hart High School in 1980 and was
an assistant coach until 1987. During those eight seasons, he was involved in five
league championships and two CIF Championships (1983, 1986). Coach Herrington
has resided in Newhall most of his life and is an alumnus of Hart High. He attended
and played offensive line for two seasons at College of the Canyons and two seasons
at CSUN. Coach Herrington teaches Physical Education and Health at Hart and is
also the Athletic Director.

Rick Herrington - Defensive Coordinator
Coach Rick Herrington enters his twelfth year as Hart's Defensive Coordinator. In
his 22 years of coaching, Rick has had success on every level he has coached,
including tour consecutive undefeated seasons (40-0) in the mid 80's. In the past 10
years, Rick has developed eighteen all-league linebackers and an All-CIF linebacker
in each of the last six seasons. A Hart graduate, Rick attended College of the Canyons
and graduated from CSUN. He teaches Special Education at Hart, where he also
coaches golf. Rick and his wife Jamie are the proud parents of a one year old baby
daughter, Kasey.

Dean Herrington - Offensive Coordinator
Coach Dean Herrington begins his twelfth year as Hart's Offensive Coordinator.
Dean's specialty is coaching quarterbacks. His quarterbacks have been named All-
CIF in each of the last 12 seasons, (11 at Hart and 1 at Bellflower). For fifteen
consecutive seasons, Hart has had an All-CIF quarterback. Dean's quarterbacks are
among the state passing leaders every year. Dean is also a much sought after speaker
on the passing game. Dean, an All-CIF quarterback at Hart in 1981, attended College
of the Canyons and graduated from CSUN. In the off-season Dean also coaches golf.

Dan Houghton - Assistant Coach
Coach Dan Houghton enters his thirteenth year of coaching at Hart High. Dan has
coached the offensive and defensive lines the last nine seasons, developing a
number of Division I linemen. Dan was also a very successful track coach. In five
seasons his boys' teams won five consecutive league championships and his girls'
teams won three league championships. Dan is currently a counselor at Hart. Coach
Houghton attended Vista High School and Palomar Junior College. He graduated
from Cal. Lutheran, where he was an Academic All-American. Dan and his wife
Denise are the proud parents of two children, daughter Nicole, ·eight, and son,
Garrett, five.
