Cut a hole in the bottom of the water tank of an appropriate size. The size is dependent on
whether or not you wish to use it for egress and ingress. It may be prudent to cut more then one
hole. The function of the hole is to allow for the removal of rust and dirt removed from the
interior. Accordingly scale the inside <>r sandblast if necessary. Contact the appropriate agency
regarding the issue of confined space and follow their recommendations. OSHA has no sense of
humor in regards to violation of confined space regulations.
The holes in the tank can be sealed in number of ways depending upon the degree of localized
corrosion. Replacement of the sheets is a suitable method for large areas of damage wherea.~
sealing individual hoJes works well for scattered point defects. Another method is to Apply
patches to the inside and weld in place. This is not as desin1ble a method as you would want
because corrosion can occur between the sheets, however it can be a short term stop gap method.
Oil tanks do not normally corrode from the inside due to the oil residue therein. Inspect the tank
and piping to the fuel system. It is very important that there be no opportunity for oil to leak out
during operation or storage as this wi11 represent a hazardous material spill which can be costly.
Repair the appurtenances as necessary. The issue of safety is paramount both on the tender as
wen as on the engine.
