ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I am indebted to many people for their assistance and
encouragement.
I would first like to thank Dr. Maurice Zigmond, who
devoted much of his academic career to researching Kawaiisu
language and ethnobotany, and his wife Kathy for providing
me with informative articles.
I am especially grateful that Dr. Sheldon Klein gave
me permission to use interviews he collected in the summer
of 1958. The interviews of Fred and Rosie appear, courtesy
of Dr. Klein, under the auspices of the linguistics
department of the University of Minnesota.
I also wish to thank my husband for his unwavering
confidence in my ability to complete this project,
especially during those times when my confidence wavered.
Most of all, I am indebted to Clara and Harold
Williams, Carmen Peebles, Monty, and Andy Greene for
welcoming me into their homes and patiently answering all of
my questions. The wealth of information in the stories and
insight that they shared with me are only a glimpse of their
lives and experiences.
