In 1963 — the same year Scott Newhall purchased the Newhall Signal and Saugus Enterprise — the publisher of the San Fernando Valley Sun was trying to make inroads into the Santa Clarita Valley with a Newhall-Saugus edition, published every other Thursday. According to son Tony Newhall (in this 2019 interview), the move prompted Scott Newhall to make The Signal a "more legitimate" newspaper by expanding it from weekly publication (on Thursdays) to twice a week (Thursdays and Sundays) beginning in November 1965, then thrice weekly (Monday-Wednesday-Friday) in October 1966. The Sun retreated to its own valley.
