Katherine Diane Sarenana

Katherine Diane Sarenana, 73, a member of the Fernandeño-Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at Providence Holy Cross hospital in Mission Hills.

Sarenana was born in North Hollywood on Nov. 30, 1940. She lived her entire life in the San Fernando Valley. She was the daughter of Rita Rivera, an elder of the Tataviam tribe whose ancestors helped build the San Fernando Mission. The tribe traces its history to the valley region, which the Spanish settled in the 1700s.

She is survived by her husband Jesus; brothers Joe, Ray, Jack and Andy; six children: Priscilla, Frank, Richard, William, Koila and Christopher; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Family, friends and fellow members of the Fernandeño-Tataviam Band of Mission Indians will pay tribute Tuesday, Dec 17, at 10:45 a.m. at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills which sits on the land built by her ancestors.
