Narrative: SGT Ian Timothy D. Gelig of Stevenson Ranch served as an armored-vehicle driver assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. At age 25, SGT Gelig was killed March 1, 2010, when a suicide bomber drove into his convoy in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. Sgt. Gelig's commendations include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Basic Parachutist Badge, and the NATO Medal. SGT Gelig is buried at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, Calif.

The Sergeant Ian T.D. Gelig Memorial Scholarship was established in May 2010 by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and awarded annually to returning SCV military veterans and/or their immediate family members who are attending or plan to attend an accredited institute of higher learning in Southern California.
