Narrative: LCpl Richard P. Slocum of Saugus joined the Marine Corps right out of high school and served in a combat role with the 3rd Marine Division in Iraq. At age 19, he was killed while manning a machine gun in the turret of a Humvee when it accidentally crashed while trying to avoid a barrier near Abu Gharib, Iraq, on October 24, 2004. LCpl Slocum is buried at Eternal Valley Cemetery in Newhall, Calif.
