                  c a tio n   o f  Hewhall  and  contiguous  school  d is tr ic ts *

                           The  problem  c o n sists  o f  making  a   comprehensive  survey

                  o f  th e   v ario u s  phases  of  th ese  sch oo ls,  a l l   o f  which  a re   in ­

                 dependent  in   th e   elem entary  f ie ld ,  b u t  a  p a rt  of  th e   Los

                 Angeles  C ity   High  School  D istric t*   These  schools  a re   in ­

                 dependent  o f  each  o th er  and  a re   governed  la rg e ly   by  th e ir

                 re sp e c tiv e   boards  o f  tru ste e s*   The  county  sup erin tend en t

                  o f  schools,  through  h is   a s s is ta n ts ,  has  d ire c t  su p erv isio n


                 over  them*  Very  l i t t l e   d ire c t  h e a lth   su p erv isio n   i s   had  in
                 any  of  them  w ith  th e   exception  of  Hewhall  and  Saugus,  which


                 have  th e   s e rv ic e s   of  a  p a rt  tim e  n u rse,  b u t  a l l   have  access

                 to   th e   county  h e a lth   ce n te r  a t   San  Fernando.

                           These  school  d i s t r i c t s   a re   lo cated   m ainly  between  th e

                 R idge,  th e   s ta te   highway  over  which  i s   spoken  o f  a s  the

                 Ridge  Route,  and  the  range  o f m ountains  Ju st  n o rth   o f  San

                 Fernando  V alley.  T heir  f a c u ltie s   v ary   in   s iz e   from  one  to
