Telephone listings for Newhall span all of one page in March 1923, with 35 numbers listed. Phone book page on display in the William S. Hart Museum. Hart's phone number was 20. His phone would have rung in the Ranch House, as there was not yet a hilltop mansion.

Dialing "1" would get you the Hammond Lumber Company — if there were such a thing as dialing. There wasn't. Calls were connected by operators until direct dialing came along in 1960.

Telephone service was really catching on in 1923. After a slow start in 1900 with one telephone — and no second telephone customer until 1911 — the third customer signed up in 1912. By the end of 1922 there were 31 customers, and by the end of 1923 there were 42. Thirty-five customers in March 1923 comports with published reports of Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company subscriber numbers for the area.
