Catalog No: SW.SCV1801
Pestle found by local historian Stan Walker in mid-June 2018 on the narrow strip of land between Sierra Highway and the 14 Freeway in Newhall, near the access road to the city of Santa Clarita's Elsmere Canyon Open Space.
Across Sierra Highway to the west is the south end of the Needham Ranch industrial park development.
Size, shape and material are "correct" for the area. Mostly buried when found (see photo showing exposed surface); non-grinding end was partially cracked off and missing.
The location of the major Tataviam village of Tochonanga, most of whose people were removed to the San Fernando Mission by the end of 1799, has not been identified in modern times.
However, based on early maps and topographical features, a strong candidate location is the general vicinity where this pestle was found.
