"During the months of Ru gust and September, 1889, Reu. F. D.
Seward, Synodical Missionary preached at Newhall, four Sabbaths
with the idea of organizing a Presbyterian Church but it did not seem
best at that time. But in May 1891, members signified their desire for
membership in such a church, and by authority of the Home Mission
Committee of the Los Angeles Presbytery, Reu. Seward preached again
May 31, 1891, and organized the First Presbyterian Church of Newhall
with the following members:
Alex I. Fraser Mrs. Maggie Fraser
Samuel Grier Mrs. Callie Grier
Mrs. Flora Arnott Alex Hume
Mrs. Alex Hume Henry Miller
Mrs. Ellen Miller Mrs. Barbara Lane
Miss Lillie Miller Mrs. R. D. Shryock
P. V. Kinnear Mrs. Lucy Mendenhall
Mrs. Ella Drew Mrs. Ida Ward
P. U. Kinnear and RleH Hume were elected Ruling Elders of the
Church, but their ordination and installation were deferred. The
Synodical Missionary urged euery member of the Church to let the
Light of the Gospel shine uery purely and uery brightly all around and
the new church with all its interests was commended to God in
prayer. The following Sabbath, June 7, 1891, Mr. Seward preached
ogoin in the school house and administered the Lord's Supper and
baptized Stella, Rima Pearl, Jessie Ethel and Flora Bell, children of Mr.
ond Mrs. Grier."
In Ru gust 1891, Mr. C. S. Hogan agreed to build the Presbyterion
Church for a total sum of S 1225. His bid was accepted by the Session
ond on September 15, 1891, the building was accepted.
