Who would have guessed that a Junior and a Fresh-
man would have so much in common? Junior Sarah
Frerichs and Freshman Emily Yeseta recently had a
chance to spend the day together at Paint A Dream
to get to know a new person in a carefree environ-
ment. Of course in the beginning, things were a little
awkward but once the girls began to pick out their
pottery, the communication started to flow. They both
decide to paint containers so that their artwork would
also be conventional and at first their eyes were
drawn to the same example piece with a rainbow lid.
Because there were none of that type left, Sarah's
choice was that of a night with stars and a moon while
Emily's choice was that of a day in the shape of a pair
of sandals. Sarah then saw a table filled with stencils
and they chatted about what they could add to the
sides of their pottery to make it more creative.
Despite their opposite themes, Sarah and Emily sat
down to begin their masterpieces and found out that
they had a lot in common. Sarah was the first to break
the ice by asking if Emily played sports. Emily then
explained that she used to horseback ride before she
moved to Castaic from Burbank during middle school,
and Sarah told about being on Valencia's JV Softball
T earn. That's when the "do you know" so-and-so game
started with Emily listing her friends also on softball. The
conversation then lead to one about school including
the differences from jr. high to high school and also
Emily's change from a private Catholic school where she
was told what days she could wear what to public one
where she could wear anything. Sarah attended La
Mesa jr. high and therefore somewhat understood
about uniforms. The two also connected and built
enough of a trust to talk about the guys that they both
liked. Since they both are in different grades and
belong to different social circles, there was an ease that
they would not blab it all over school. They agreed
that in those situations sometimes friends make
comments that are kind of embarrassing and best kept
to themselves.
As Sarah and Emily progressed with their projects, they
realized that the stencils that had worked so beautifully
in their minds did not come out quite as well on
rounded objects. After fixing the stencil's smearing, they
made their final touches and initialed their works of
art. They said their goodbyes and "I'll see you around"
and went their separate ways, each touched by their
experience.
