"Ramona Waltz" sheet music with Italian and Spanish text, Dolores Del Rio cover, spot color (light maroon), published in 1928 by Leo Feist of New York. Theme song to Edwin Carewe's 1928 screen adaptation of Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel, "Ramona," starring Dolores Del Rio and Warner Baxter.

Several pieces of music were published with the apparent intent of being performed in accompaniment to the screening of the silent movie, the most important and enduring of which was the "Ramona Waltz" by L. Wolfe Gilbert (lyrics) and Mabel Wayne (music).

Jackson's "Ramona" novel was inspired in large part by her impressions of Camulos and its occupants, the descendants of Ygnacio del Valle. The story romanticized California ranch life and drew Easterners out West — a fact not lost on either the Del Valles or the nascent Southern Pacific Railroad, both of which marketed Camulos as the "Home of Ramona." Jackson's epic gave rise to an annual play and several films including Carewe's version, which in some ways is truest to Jackson's intent of calling attention to the mistreatment of and prejudices against California Indians by both the Spanish colonists and their American successors.

The Carewe picture was an 8-reeler adapted for the screen by Finis Fox and released May 20, 1928 by United Artists and Inspiration Pictures. It was lost for several decades until a print was discovered in Prague in 2010. Read about it here.
