Santa Clarita History Takes To The Airwaves
Public Access Television Airs
"Legacy: Santa Clarita's Living History"
Santa Clarita Santa Clarita Valley's history will be aired on local public broadcast television beginning Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. when the show, "Legacy: Santa Clarita's Living History" will début. The program is designed to study local history from SCV's earliest pioneers to the St. Francis Dam disaster, to the establishment of our local city government.
"Legacy" is about people, people whose families homesteaded in the Santa Clarita Valley in the 1800s, people who carved their own legacy in recent decades, and people who are experts in particular aspects of Santa Clarita history. "History isn't static," says show host and producer Leon Worden. "Everyone has a story to tell, and new information about our valley's past is coming to light all the time."
Available to AT&T Broadband1 and Time Warner Cable subscribers throughout the Santa Clarita Valley on Public Access Channel 20, "Legacy" incorporates authentic photos from the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society archives as well as informative guests in this half-hour talk show.
"Legacy's" first show, entitled "Placerita Gold" will feature George and Gayle Starbuck, a brother and sister team whose ancestors, known collectively as the Walker Family, homesteaded in Placerita and Sand canyons in the 1860s. The Starbucks will trace the history of the unique "Placerita White Oil" and show what's left of their original family cabins.
"Legacy's" next six shows are entitled the "Birth of Valencia," "Mentryville and the Newhall of the 1930s and 1940s," "The Ridge Route," Sand Canyon 1960 and Beyond," "Agua Dulce 1930s and Borax Mining" and City of Santa Clarita Formation."
"Legacy" is a School-to-Career Partnership project of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, the SCV School & Business Alliance, and AT&T Broadband. "Legacy" provides a hands-on learning experience for local career-oriented high school students who serve as the production crew, under the professional guidance of AT&T Broadband Original Programming staff members and community volunteers at the SCVTV studio in Newhall.
The genesis of "Legacy" can be traced to a series of meetings among the leaders of the Historical Society, the Alliance and AT&T Broadband, who came together in a quest to jointly accomplish their varied goals.
"'Legacy' demonstrates how we're able to bring our production expertise to the table to help community organizations provide meaningful local content to our Santa Clarita Valley audience," says Susan Shapiro, AT&T Broadband's community programming manager. "As the local television provider, it's something we are in a unique position to do."
"Scholastically, 'Legacy' is a great opportunity for students to play a part in the production of a history show about their own community. They can learn it, live it, and produce it for all to enjoy," says Ann Kerman, executive director of the SCV School & Business Alliance. "This project works well for our high school campuses that have developed career paths in the areas of video and television production, as well as provide them immediate work experience and the opportunity to practice what they have learned in the classroom, thus providing students with a real world learning experience."
For the Historical Society, "Legacy" fulfills specific strategic goals. The Historical Society's board of directors recognized the need to capture more oral histories, to expand our educational partnerships, and to heighten the organization's role in the community," says Worden, the Society's president. "With 'Legacy,' not only are we sharing Santa Clarita history with the public, but we're also preserving every episode of the show for all time in the Society's archives."
With the photograph collection of the SCV Historical Society as a foundation ... with the ability of the AT&T Broadband staff to produce top-quality programming ... with the coordination of the SCV School & Business Alliance ... with the assistance of Hart District ROP Instructor Philip Scorza (whose own local history show, 'Points of Interest,' continues to air on Public Access Channel 20) ... and with the generous support of Valencia Bank & Trust2 - "Legacy" captures the stories of the Santa Clarita Valley from those who were there, while providing educational opportunities for television production students and sharing SCV history with the valley's cable television subscribers.
A new episode of "Legacy" will appear twice a week on SCVTV Public Access Channel 20.
